Medical Student Rotations

Junior/Third Year Students:

M-3 Ambulatory Medicine Clerkship – Through MCW DFCM

Course goals and objectives:

  1. Strengthen interpersonal/communication skills with patients

  2. Strengthen H&P skills and the need for focused H&P’s for common problems

  3. Develop skills in generalized problem solving

  4. Become familiar with common problems in primary care

  5. Understand the scope of family practice

  6. Appreciate continuity of care

Required Activities:

  1. Team Based Learning sessions given by the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Medical College of Wisconsin (on Tuesdays)

  2. Pathway activities on Thursday afternoons

  3. Clinic Sessions at Waukesha Family Practice Clinic

  4. OB or inpatient Call Day

  5. Morning Report (Tuesdays and Thursdays), Journal Club, Patient Safety Conference, High Risk OB Conference

Optional Activities:

  1. Home Visits

  2. Nursing Home Visits

  3. Teaching Service Rounds

  4. Newborn Rounds with Obstetrics rounding

  5. Colposcopy Conference

Senior/Fourth Year Students Sub-Internship:

All Students act as an intern/PGY1 on our adult inpatient teaching service at WMH.
Optional activities: practice management activities, attend educational conferences, newborn and/or OB inpatient management.
Offered ONLY through MCW DCFM - (if applying from outside MCW you could consider the below listed audition rotation), contact Diane Behling (diane.behling@phci.org).

Learning Activities:

  • Participate as sub-intern in the daily inpatient teaching service rounds at WMH.

  • Attend semi-weekly teaching service conferences and present patients.

  • Independently perform and document Histories and Physicals and Discharges, perform inpatient management throughout the hospital, including the ICU.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • History and physical exam skills

  • Function as an intern on a busy inpatient teaching service team

  • Understanding of the role of psychosocial factors in illness and patient compliance

  • Understanding of the role and tools of the effective family physician

  • Ability to formulate an appropriate patient assessment and effective treatment plan

Senior/Fourth Year “Audition” Elective:

Approximately 20 sessions for one month, with various faculty and residents - also available as a two week rotation. The students are scheduled with their assigned faculty member whenever possible and as our most flexible rotation, activities are available throughout the residency practice including outpatient clinic, inpatient teaching service, newborn or obstetric service, and several other options.

Goals:

  • Independently take patient history and perform physical exam.

  • Display appropriate communications skills, including respect/empathy for patients and clinical staff, and understanding of cross-cultural issues.

  • Obtain Clinical experience and familiarity with local full-spectrum Family Medicine at ProHealth Care.

Learning Activities:

  • Offered as a 2 or 4 week elective through ProHealth

  • Time is spent working in the full spectrum of family medicine

  • Opportunities include Clinic Sessions, Addiction Management, Inpatient Adult or Newborn/Obstetric Management, Nursing Home Care, Home Visits, and Free Clinic opportunities
